Held in memory are the fine times shared with you and Ron. Blessings, Jan
Ronald D. Richardson, PhD, aged 83 years of Glen Mills, PA and formerly of Tavistock, Wilmington, DE, passed away peacefully on the 11th of February 2018.
Ron was born in County Durham, England to Maurice William and Doris May Richardson. He was educated in England, and attended the University of Birmingham, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and a PhD in Organic Chemistry. At the age of 23, he accepted an invitation from the US Army to assist in setting up a new research program in the US. Ron was instrumental in establishing the program at the University of Florida, Gainesville, FL, where he became a Research Fellow. The Army program continued at that location for twenty years after he had left to resume industrial research and development work at Imperial Chemical Industries Ltd. (later Astra Zeneca) in the United Kingdom. Later, he returned to the USA, and spent thirty years with DuPont in Wilmington, DE in a variety of management and consulting positions. Over his career, Ron worked and consulted, at the proprietary level, on the manufacture and use of chemicals in over one hundred industries in eighteen countries, on five continents, and over thirty US states. Inevitably this work resulted in a deep involvement in the development of, and compliance with federal, state, local and international regulations. His primary areas of responsibility included occupation safety and health, biosafety, environmental issues, and homeland security. As a DuPont corporate consultant, he served on four chemical industry trade organization safety and environmental committees in Washington, DC. He served as an Associate Editor of the technical publication Flourine Chemistry Reviews. Ron was an active member of several professional societies, and he enjoyed emeritus status with the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Chemical Society, and the Royal Chemical Society of London, UK. Following retirement, Ron became an active member of the Wilmington based DelEASI organization, which enables experienced, senior volunteers to provide free guidance and assistance to state and local government, and nonprofit organizations in solving public safety, health, and environmental problems.
Ron was an active member of the Episcopal Church of the Ascension, Claymont, DE for over fifty years, where he served in many roles, including Senior Warden, Financial Adviser, and both junior and senior vestryman.
Ron is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Janet. They met in Birmingham, UK, where Ron was a graduate research student, and Janet graduated from the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, School of Nursing. Janet and Ron were avid world travelers, and he was able to visit each of the seven continents.
Ron is survived also by son Tony, his wife Donna, and grandsons Nicholas and Derek of Virginia Beach, VA; son Ian and his wife Elizabeth, and grandsons Jonathan and Andrew of Ocoee, FL; and daughter Ann of Grove, Wantage, England.
Ronald's funeral service will be held at the Church of the Ascension, 3717 Philadelphia Pike, Claymont, DE 19703 on Saturday, February 17, 2018.
Visitation will be from 9:30-10:45 am, with the Memorial Service following at 11:00 am.
